Leptinella ‘Platts Black’

Leptinella, commonly known as brass buttons or cotula, is a genus of low-growing, mat-forming plants native to New Zealand, belonging to the Asteraceae family.

Key Characteristics:

1. Foliage: The foliage of Leptinella Platts Black is black to dark green in colour, with the colour developing  darker shades if in full sun.  The foliage is usually finely dissected and fern-like, creating a lush carpeting effect.
2. Size: These plants are low-growing, forming dense mats that hug the ground. The height can range from a few centimeters to around 15-20 centimeters, depending on the specific species. Spreads using its root system getting up to 50cm wide.
3. Flowers: Leptinella produces small, daisy-like flowers that are often inconspicuous. The main ornamental appeal lies in the dense dark coloured foliage.
4. Hardiness: Leptinella species are known for their hardiness and adaptability. They can tolerate a range of conditions, including varying soil types and light levels.

Using Leptinella in a New Zealand Garden:

1. Groundcover: Leptinella is well-suited as a groundcover plant, forming a carpet-like layer that suppresses weeds and adds a touch of greenery to garden spaces. It is particularly effective in covering bare soil between stepping stones or in rock gardens.
2. Rock Gardens: The low-growing and spreading nature of Leptinella makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens. Its fine foliage complements the rugged textures of rocks, creating a harmonious and visually appealing landscape.
3. Containers and Hanging Baskets: Leptinella can be grown in containers or hanging baskets, adding a unique and cascading element to patios, balconies, or other elevated spaces. This is especially suitable for smaller gardens or urban settings.
4. Path Edging: Plant Leptinella along garden paths or walkways to create soft, defined edges. Its low height and spreading habit make it an attractive alternative to traditional edging plants.
5. Under Trees and Shrubs: Use Leptinella as a groundcover under larger trees or shrubs, where it can thrive in partial shade and provide a lush carpet beneath the canopy.

Plants are supplied in 5cm wide pots and average one year in age.
