20 x Laurus nobilis (Bay Laurel)

Laurus nobilis, commonly known as Bay Laurel, is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree that adds both ornamental and culinary value to gardens. Native to the Mediterranean region, this species thrives in a variety of climates, including New Zealand.

Cultivation and Climate:

  • Climate Suitability: Laurus nobilis prefers a mild, Mediterranean-like climate, making it well-suited for New Zealand’s temperate regions. It thrives in areas with moderate temperatures and well-distributed rainfall. Frost tender when young.
  • Sunlight Requirements: Bay Laurel thrives in full sun to partial shade. Plant it in a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth.
  • Soil Conditions: Well-draining soil is crucial for Bay Laurel. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is preferred. Incorporate organic matter such as compost into the soil to enhance fertility and drainage.

Planting:

  • Planting Time: Laurus nobilis can be planted throughout the year in New Zealand, but spring and early autumn are ideal times for establishment.
  • Spacing: Allow sufficient space between plants, approximately 2-3 meters, to ensure proper air circulation and prevent diseases. Can get to 3m after four – five years and 6-7 meters when mature.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Watering: Bay Laurel prefers consistent moisture but is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
  • Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain a desirable shape and size. Prune in late spring or early summer to encourage bushier growth.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it may lead to excessive foliage at the expense of essential oils.

Utilization in the Garden:

  • Culinary Uses: Laurus nobilis leaves are popular for culinary purposes, adding a unique flavor to soups, stews, and sauces. Harvest leaves as needed, but avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at a time.
  • Ornamental Value: Bay Laurel’s glossy, aromatic leaves make it an attractive addition to gardens. Consider planting it as a specimen plant, in containers, or as a hedge for both functional and aesthetic purposes.
  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Bay Laurel is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, be vigilant for scale insects and aphids, and treat promptly if detected.
