Description

Carex tenuiculmis, commonly known as slender sedge, is a perennial grass-like plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family

Carex tenuiculmis thrives in moist to wet soils, making it suitable for gardens with well-draining soil or those prone to occasional waterlogging. It is often found in riparian areas such as wetland margins. It is a good choice for gardens near streams or water features. The plant is hardy and can withstand both full sun and partial shade.

The leaves have a nice  red – brown colour, it usually grows 50 to 70cm tall but can get up to 1m in certain conditions.

Landscaping and Garden Use: Carex tenuiculmis offers several benefits for New Zealand gardens:

  1. Erosion Control: The dense root system of Carex tenuiculmis makes it effective in preventing soil erosion, making it an ideal choice for gardens located on slopes or near water bodies.
  2. Aesthetic Appeal: The slender,  red – brown arching leaves add an ornamental touch to garden landscapes, providing a graceful and natural appearance.
  3. Water Garden Features: Given its natural habitat in riparian areas, Carex tenuiculmis is well-suited for gardens featuring ponds, streams, or other water features. It can tolerate drier conditions but will not grow as well or survive as lone

Maintenance:

  • Pruning: Occasional pruning can help maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or damaged foliage.
  • Fertilization: While not excessively demanding, a light application of balanced fertilizer in spring can support healthy growth.
