Description

Carex flagellifera, commonly known as the New Zealand Hair Sedge, is a native grass-like plant that belongs to the Cyperaceae family.  This perennial evergreen grass forms dense tussocks of gracefully arching, vivid green foliage, making it an excellent choice for adding texture and color to a  garden.

Key Characteristics:

  1. Foliage: The long, slender leaves of Carex flagellifera are its defining feature. These arching leaves, ranging from   green to green-brown colour, the grass creates a distinctive fountain-like effect.
  2. Height and Spread: Typically reaching a height of 40-50 cm, Carex flagellifera forms clumps that can spread up 60 cm wide. This growth habit makes it suitable for both ground cover and focal point plantings.
  3. Hardiness: Resilient and adaptable, Carex flagellifera thrives in a variety of soil types, including well-drained  except heavily water logged soils.
  4. Sun Requirements: While it can tolerate partial shade, Carex flagellifera prefers full sun to maintain its vibrant green color. In shadier conditions, the foliage may become slightly less intense.

Uses in a New Zealand Garden:

  1. Ornamental Borders: Use Carex flagellifera as a border plant along pathways or garden edges. Its gracefully arching foliage adds a soft and elegant touch to the landscape.
  2. Mass Plantings: Create eye-catching mass plantings by grouping several Carex flagellifera specimens together. This is particularly effective in larger garden spaces, providing a cohesive and visually appealing display.
  3. Water Features: The graceful, cascading foliage of Carex flagellifera complements the aesthetics of water features. Plant it near ponds or streams to soften the hardscape and integrate the garden with aquatic elements.
  4. Wildlife Gardens: As a native plant, Carex flagellifera can attract local wildlife, such as birds and insects. Its presence can contribute to the ecological balance of a garden.

Care and Maintenance:

  1. Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. While it can tolerate some drought, regular watering ensures optimal growth.
  2. Pruning: Trim dead or damaged foliage as needed to maintain the plant’s appearance. Carex flagellifera responds well to pruning and rejuvenation.
  3. Soil: Plant in well-draining soil and amend with organic matter for improved fertility. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  4. Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilization, as Carex flagellifera generally thrives in nutrient-rich soils.

Plants supplied are young plants in 5cm wide plants and average 1 to 1.5 years in age.
