Description
Austroderia fulvida, commonly known as Toetoe or New Zealand toe toe, is a native grass species that thrives in New Zealand’s diverse ecosystems. . This is the real Toetoe rather than pampas grass.
Botanical Characteristics: Austroderia fulvida belongs to the Poaceae family and is characterized by its tall, arching stems, which can reach heights of up to 3 meters. The plant forms dense, tussock-like clumps with graceful, pendulous seed heads. The leaves are long and slender. Toetoe is known for its vibrant green foliage, which turns golden brown in the autumn, providing year-round visual interest.
Adaptability and Soil Requirements: Toetoe is highly adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. While it can tolerate periods of drought, regular watering is recommended, especially during dry spells, to promote healthy growth. Toetoe is well-suited for coastal gardens, as it can tolerate salt spray and windy conditions.
Sunlight and Climate: Austroderia fulvida thrives best in full sun. It is well-suited to New Zealand’s temperate climate and can withstand mild frosts. In colder regions, it is advisable to protect young plants during winter until they are well-established.
Cultural and Landscape Uses:
- Ornamental Landscaping: Toetoe adds a distinctive and native charm to gardens, making it an excellent choice for landscaping. Its tall and graceful appearance makes it suitable as a background plant or a focal point in garden beds.
- Erosion Control: The deep root system of Toetoe helps stabilize soil, making it an effective choice for erosion control on slopes and coastal areas. Often used in revegetation projects besides streams and ponds.
Maintenance: Toetoe is a relatively low-maintenance plant. Pruning dead or damaged leaves and seed heads will help maintain its aesthetic appeal. If you wish – dividing clumps every few years will rejuvenate the plant and encourage vigorous growth.
The plants are in 5cm wide pots and average one year in age.
