Description

Ophiopogon ‘Black Dragon’ is a perennial ornamental grass known for its striking dark, almost black, foliage.
The plant typically reaches a height of 6-8 inches (5-10 cm) and spreads slowly, forming dense clumps.

– The main attraction of ‘Black Dragon’ is its slender, arching leaves that emerge green but mature to a deep purplish-black color.  The foliage provides a dramatic contrast when planted alongside lighter-colored plants or in rock gardens.

In late spring to early summer, small bell-shaped lavender or pink flowers may appear on short spikes, adding an extra layer of visual interest.  While the flowers are not the primary feature, they complement the dark foliage nicely.

Ophiopogon ‘Black Dragon’ is well-suited for New Zealand gardens, particularly in regions with a temperate climate.

The plant prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.  Amending the soil with organic matter can enhance its growth.

‘Black Dragon’ is adaptable to various light conditions but tends to display the deepest color in partial to full shade. In New Zealand, it can be planted in areas with filtered sunlight or under taller plants to provide shade.

Low-maintenance and easy to care for, ‘Black Dragon’ requires minimal pruning. Removing spent flower spikes and cleaning up any yellow or damaged leaves is generally sufficient.

Plants supplied are in 5cm pots and average 1 -2 years in age.
